Larry asked me for our first date a few days after he bought his new fire engine red GTO in 1968. We were married in 1970 and sold our GTO in 1973 as it didn't have air, power steering, or power brakes and we now had 2 children. So a family car was more in order. We often talked of our first car and making the car payments of $82.92 a month. As our family grew and we got older, too, I often thought if I ever had a job, I would buy my husband another one someday. Finally, after 30 years, I was able to buy him a 69 GTO for his 50th birthday. It is in beautiful condition and only needs a few minor touchups. My sons got it the night before his party and we put it in a friend's garage in the small town where we live. At the party, our son drove up and gunned the motor. Larry just looked and kept talking to a friend of his. The whole town knew about the surprise except for him. When I told him "happy birthday honey" he was totally speechless. I can't think of a time when I have had more fun. We took the car to a classic car rally this summer and he got so many compliments on the car. This one doesn't have any of the extras either and it was 98 degrees the day we went to the rally and we were sort of remembering why we sold the first one! It has a huge moter that is not factory and is currently being "turned up" some more and he plans to put nitrous on as well. I got him some new rims for Christmas. We are looking forward to attending more classic car shows. I think we have found a hobby for retirement years! One of our friends asked if we were going to go out and park like we used to. It only took a moment to reply that if we tried it at our age, we probably would have to have the jaws of life get us out as we can't bend like we used to! South Dakota |
