In late September, 1967, at the tender age of 20, I traded my 1966 Chevy II Nova SS on a Champane 1967 GTO hardtop coupe. The 1968's were due out any time, so the selection of the 1967 models was slim. I longed for a 4 speed, H.O., but none were to be had. The Champane color with the gold interior caught my eye. It had the YS engine with only "335" Horsepower, and a Turbo 400 with a column shift. My mother accompanied me and the salesman out for a test drive.I headed for the local interstate! When I pulled up on the ramp to enter the traffic I nailed it! By the time it shifted into high gear at about 85 mph, I was looking for the nearest exit to take me back to the dealership to sign the papers! The salesman was huddled down in the back seat! I met a young lady about two weeks later, and it was love at first sight. We eloped ten days later. Four months later, now as a married man, my beloved "Goat" had to go. I couldn't afford the gas, even at 38 cents per gallon for Sunco 260! We always missed the "Goat". 32 years and two grown sons later, we found another Champane Gold Hardtop equiped very similar! On the weekend before our 32 anniversery, we purchased it and drove it home! It has taken most of a life time, but now I have both a "Goat" and the same girl! God is good isn't he! |
