My first pontiac was a 1974 GP. It was an model J. It was brown on brown with a 400/4bbl. My mother had been the second owner. She let me have it when I turned 16. I did everything in that car. I was never home. I was always on the make and the GP never let me down. When I got it there was 120000 well kept miles on the clock. I proceeded to install another 100000 hard teenage miles. One of my favorite storys from that car is when I raced my buddy in his 73 Camaro. We were working at the same factory on the 2nd shift when I pulled up on him on a 4 lane highway. We were doing 60 mph and we floored it. He had a 350/3spd rebuilt. He started to pull away but by 120 I had caught up to him. It was night so I could see his grimace as I passed him by. We had both installed 160 speedos and I pulled mine up to 155. At this point I am thinking about my crappy tires and how long it had been since my last bearing pack. When we talked later (yes we were very lucky) he said he topped out at 135. I still rag on him for getting beat by a stock pontiac when his car had headers, holly, and performance gears (mine had 2:40). |
